WASHINGTON – Ahead of the one year anniversary of the Michigan State University (MSU) shooting, Brady PAC today announced its endorsement of former CIA agent and current U.S. Representative Elissa Slotkin. Keeping Michigan families safe is a central part of Slotkin’s agenda.
Slotkin brought her colleagues on both sides of the aisle together to pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act following the preventable school shooting in Oxford, Michigan in 2021 that killed four students, injured seven people, and traumatized an entire community. She has continued to be a leading voice on gun violence prevention following the February 2023 Michigan State University shooting in East Lansing that killed three and injured five others.
“Elissa Slotkin was a leader on public safety long before two shootings devastated Michigan communities. And on the days of the Oxford and East Lansing tragedies, and every single day thereafter, she has stood with the families of the victims to ensure this never happens again,” said Fred Guttenberg, Brady PAC senior advisor and Parkland father of Jaime Guttenberg.
“As a father who lost his child in a mass shooting, I’ll never forget the compassion, the sheer tenacity, and the heartfelt action taken by Elissa Slotkin to keep other families from joining the group to which I now belong. I urge Michigan voters to add this absolute powerhouse to the U.S. Senate.”
“Elissa Slotkin has the record, the vision, and the guts to be a leader in the U.S. Senate for Michigan on gun violence prevention and we’re proud to endorse her campaign. In the last few years, we’ve seen legislators in Michigan make real progress on keeping families safe and sending Elissa to the Senate is going to help them finish the job in Washington. A vote for Elissa Slotkin is a vote for Michigan’s freedom, including the right to live free of gun violence,” stated Ashley Lantz, Brady PAC executive director.
“I am grateful for this endorsement from Brady PAC, a group that is working tirelessly to address one of the greatest threats to our children,” said Slotkin. “You either acknowledge that the number one killer of children is guns or you don’t. You either care about working on the number one killer of children or you don’t. And while many of my colleagues hide under a rock unwilling to do anything that threatens their own reelection, it is the responsibility of every elected official to do something and history will not smile upon those who ignored this responsibility. Michigan is a state with many responsible gun owners and being a responsible gun owner and caring about gun violence are not mutually exclusive.”
Brady PAC’s recognition of Elissa Slotkin is one of its first endorsements of the 2024 cycle.
Brady PAC, the political arm of Brady, was created in 2018 to counter the gun industry lobby’s dark money Super PACs. Brady PAC endorses gun violence prevention champions who support common-sense gun safety policies, including universal background checks, safe storage, and a ban on new assault weapons.
