Brady Celebrates Election of Mikie Sherrill as New Jersey Governor

Governor-elect Sherrill’s victory ensures New Jersey will continue to lead in combating gun violence and illegal firearm trafficking

WASHINGTON, D.C. —  The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, and its political arm, Brady PAC, tonight congratulated Mikie Sherrill on her election as the 57th Governor of New Jersey, calling her victory a resounding endorsement of the state’s proven commitment to gun violence prevention and public safety.

Governor-elect Sherrill, a former Navy pilot and federal prosecutor, and longtime advocate for common-sense gun reform in Congress, ran on a platform centered on protecting New Jersey’s children and communities.

“New Jersey voters just made it clear that progress in addressing gun violence is not only possible, but that it remains a core part of any winning political strategy around public safety,” said Kris Brown, President of Brady and Chair of Brady PAC. “Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill has been a steadfast voice in Congress for gun violence prevention, including a commitment to oversight and accountability of the gun industry. Her election ensures that New Jersey will not only maintain, but will strengthen its position as a national standard-setter in gun violence prevention.”

The Garden State already boasts some of the strongest gun violence prevention laws in the country, including universal background checks, extreme risk protection orders, child access prevention laws, assault weapons and large capacity magazine bans, and much more. Under Sherrill’s leadership, Brady anticipates continued proactive progress to protect these laws, halt the flow of illegal guns across state lines, bolster community violence intervention programs in historically marginalized communities, and strengthen interagency coordination to hold gun traffickers and irresponsible actors swiftly accountable.

“The fight to end gun violence is entering a new, critical phase, and New Jersey will again help lead the way,” continued Brown. “Governor-elect Sherrill will continue the necessary work of making sure illegal firearms have nowhere to hide—not in New Jersey’s cities, not in its schools, and not across its beautiful and diverse communities. We stand ready to partner with her administration and all New Jersey public officials to save lives and build a safer future for every Garden State resident.”
