WASHINGTON—Today, an 8-1 majority on the Supreme Court overturned the Fifth Circuit’s ruling in U.S. v. Rahimi, upholding a federal ban on firearm possession by those subject to domestic violence-related restraining orders. In reaction to the Court’s decision, Brady PAC’s executive director Ashley Lantz issued the following statement.
“Thousands of women and other victims of domestic violence can breathe a sigh of relief today as the Court correctly ruled that their abusers cannot own firearms. We know that two thirds of women killed by an intimate partner are killed with a gun. Guns turn domestic violence situations far more deadly—period full stop. While today’s decision will help save lives, there is so much more we can do as a country to help protect domestic violence survivors and our loved ones from gun violence and elect more gun safety champions.”
