The Spin: Lightfoot says Chicago won’t see ‘Portland-style deployment’ of federal agents | Kanye West tries to get on Illinois ballot | GOP calling on Pritzker to hold special session

Gun-control Brady PAC endorsing Democratic candidate Marie Newman: A sister to the organization the Brady group, the Brady PAC formally announced this morning that it’s endorsing Newman, a LaGrange Democrat and business consultant, in the race for Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District seat representing Chicago’s Southwest Side and suburbs.

The political action committee also is vowing financial support as she faces off against Homer Glen Republican Mike Fricilone, who is a member of the Will County Board, in the November election.

“Marie Newman supports responsible gun ownership and the safe storage of firearms, gun safety training and licensing. She knows gun safety alone is not enough to address America’s gun violence epidemic and once elected, she will support legislation such as Universal Background Checks and the ban on the commercial sale of military-style assault weapons,” Brian Lemek, Brady PAC executive director, said in a statement.

Newman edged out veteran U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, whose father held the seat before him, in the March Democratic primary.

Pritzker spokeswoman Jordan Abudayyeh says the governor “drove the efforts to enact ethics reform last fall in the veto session” and the General Assembly can proceed once the legislature’s bipartisan ethics commission delivers a “comprehensive package of effective reforms.”
