JULY 11, 2022

For Immediate Release: July 11, 2022

BOWIE, MD – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) announced major endorsements from gun safety groups including BradyPAC and Giffords, as well as a Gun Sense Candidate distinction from Moms Demand Action. These endorsements come on the heels of a historic gun package that was signed into law last month, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, and that Congressman Hoyer was instrumental in bringing to the House Floor and sending to President Biden for signature. BradyPAC is the campaign arm of the Brady Campaign to End Gun Violence, one of America’s oldest gun-safety organizations, and Giffords is a foundation launched by former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and her husband Senator Mark Kelly after the deadly mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012 to support candidates committed to passing gun safety legislation. Moms Demand Action is a movement founded by Shannon Watts after the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementry School aimed at addressing the rise in gun violence by advocating for policies that end the gun violence epidemic and keep families safe, it is also a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, the largest gun violence prevention organization in the country. Congressman Hoyer has long championed legislation to keep deadly weapons out of the hands of individuals who seek to do harm and make sure our communities are safe.

“For too long, Americans have been demanding action to address the alarming rate of gun violence in our country,” said Congressman Hoyer. “This year, I was proud to help bring a bipartisan gun safety package to the Floor and ensure its enactment, along with legislation to expand background checks and close dangerous loopholes in current background check systems. I will continue to push for commonsense gun safety legislation, and I am grateful for the strong designations of support from gun safety organizations including BradyPAC, Giffords, and Moms Demand Action. Gun violence should not be a daily occurrence in America, and when I return to Congress next year I will continue to prioritize advocating for additional measures to strengthen gun safety in the U.S. including universal background checks and long overdue bans on both high-capacity magazines and assault weapons to keep our communities safe.”

“Congressman Steny Hoyer is a relentless champion for safer communities in Maryland’s Fifth District and beyond,” stated Jason Pressberg, Executive Director of Brady PAC, a partner of the Brady Campaign to End Gun Violence. “As Majority Leader, he has consistently put forward meaningful legislation to end gun violence, and he brought his colleagues together to support historic gun safety legislation last month. We are proud to support Congressman Hoyer for re-election and we know that he will continue fighting for every possible step to protect our children and communities.”
